Denture vs Implant
by Dcare | June 07, 2022 | Dentistry
Many a times it happens that in spite of all the best efforts your teeth cannot be saved and have to be removed
Or sometimes accidents can lead to removal of tooth
So then, what is the option?
Denture (complete if all teeth are missing and partial If some teeth are missing) and implant
So which is a better option?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?
Let’s take a look
1. Removable vs fixed
Dentures are always removable and can have slight movement when you eat
While implants are fixed and they replicate your natural teeth, so they don’t move just like your natural teeth while eating

2. Bone loss
Implants substitute the root form of your teeth that lies in the bone. So it mimics the natural tooth at bone level, which does not let the bone resorb at that place
Dentures are placed only on gums and not inside the bone. So for the body the tooth is not replaced by dentures and hence there is significant bone loss. This can lead to loss of facial appearance.
3. Longevity
Because there is no bone loss in implants, it can last lifetime if there is proper maintenance from patient
In dentures, there is bone loss and thus change in structure of guns in which it rests. Hence they tend to become loose and needs to be replaced after some years.

4. Esthetics
Dentures have the acrylic plate which is sometimes visible and cannot look exactly like your natural teeth
Implants emerge from the gums and give the appearance just like your natural tooth, sometimes even difficult to distinguish.

5. Comfort
Implants are fixed and can bear the load to have your normal eating habits except for few hard items
As dentures are removable, sometimes it is difficult to chew some food. In few instances it might come out while chewing proving it to be embarrassing.

6. Cleaning
Implants are fixed so they can be cleaned by our normal brushing. It however requires periodic professional cleaning too.
Dentures are removable and food particles can get stuck beneath it. So they need to be removed after meals for cleaning properly which can be uncomfortable.

7. Cost
The cost of denture is less as compared to implants.
But if the long term cost of replacing dentures is considered, the cost accounts to the same
Ultimately it depends on individual patient’s condition to decide the best option. Visit your dentist to know the best option for you.
